Reunion 2005

A Story of Moral Courage

Lvov, Poland… December 1941 – Eighteen-year-old Joanna Szczygiel Zalucka and her family hid eight-year-old Ruth Gamzer in their home for eight months during the Holocaust. Joanna cared for the young girl and taught her how to read and write. Ruth joined her parents at the home of another Christian family, the Ojaks, and hid for two more years until liberation. Joanna continued to help by bringing food to the Ojak and Gamzer families. The JFR reunited Ruth and Joanna in 2005. The two women had not seen each other since 1944.
