The fall of 2022 marks the 81st anniversary of the murder of the Jews of Kyiv. When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, approximately 160,000 Jews lived in the city. Some 100,000 Jews fled Kyiv prior to the German occupation of the city on September 19, 1941. On September 29 and 30, 1941, more than 33,000 Jews were murdered in the ravine of Babyn Yar (Babi Yar), located at the edge of Kyiv. This was one of the largest mass murders at an individual site during the Holocaust.
