Who we are

The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous provides financial support to more than 600 non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and preserves their legacy through a national education program.

The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR) has a program for young people as they become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The program enables a Bar/Bat Mitzvah to combine the mitzvah of tzedakah with education.  It also provides a powerful way to teach young people about the importance of tzedakah, tikkun olam (repairing the world), and hakarat hatov (the seeking out and recognition of goodness).

The program matches or “twins” a Bar/Bat Mitzvah with a Righteous Gentile – a non-Jew who risked his or her life to save Jews during the Holocaust.  The JFR Bar/Bat Mitzvah program has the power to connect this special event with Jewish history and values, and provides the Bar/Bat Mitzvah with role models of human goodness and social responsibility.

Every participant in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program will have the opportunity to twin with a Righteous Gentile who saved Jews during the Holocaust.  The Bar or Bat Mitzvah chooses a rescuer with whom to be twinned.  The minimum donation for the Twinning Program is $180.

For families who would like to become more involved in our program, the JFR offers invitations for your child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah.  Invitations have been specially designed for the JFR by Checkerboard Ltd., a leading stationery and printing company that specializes in custom invitations. By using JFR–Checkerboard invitations, your family can share its act of tzedakah and involvement with the JFR with your family, friends, and guests.  The minimum donation for participating in the Invitation Program is $180.

Each participant in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program – Twinning and Invitation – will receive a certificate with the name of his or her chosen rescuer, and if your rabbi permits, the certificate can presented during the service.

You can learn more about the JFR Twinning and Invitation options here.

Whether your family chooses the Twinning or Invitation option, your choice to involve the JFR in your celebration is bound to be a powerful experience.  Through education and tzedakah your Bar/Bat Mitzvah will take on an added level of meaning and your family and friends will always remember the remarkable story of the rescuer you choose.

In addition to offering families a Twinning or Invitation option, we encourage participants to think creatively about how they can incorporate the JFR into their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.  In the past, we have had participants ask their guests to donate to the JFR in lieu of giving them a gift.  Participants have also organized walk-a-thons, bake sales, swim meets, and garage sales as fundraisers for the JFR.  Recently, one participant sold blue wristbands that said, “Never Forget,” to his guests and donated the proceeds to the JFR.  If you are interested in creating your own Mitzvah project in support of rescuers, JFR staff is available to help you design a project and provide you with informational materials about the work of the JFR.
